[STØY] is the degree project from Huddersfield-based Jase Booth, a 25 minute concept EP about a drug trip gone horribly, horribly wrong, told through the age-old medium of progressive metal that owes a great deal to Meshuggah and the like, but has a fair few interesting twists of its own.

It would appear that we here at the Rather Hip Art Scene have a penchant for quirky, small venues. The likes of the Brudenell in Leeds, and Bar 1:22 and the Parish in Huddersfield being particular favourites. Today I think it is safe to say that Manchester’s Ruby Lounge has been added to that list.

The Swellers

I want to give this gig a higher score, because The Swellers deserve it. Their newest album, ‘Ups And Downsizing’, is great fun, and live they’re even better. Talking to them afterwards proved that they were top guys as well: just about as nice as you could hope a band in their position to be. But a gig is about more than just the quality of the headlining band.
